UK Children consume just one tenth of the recommended intake of oily fish!

British children are missing out on 90% of the recommended weekly intake of oily fish, the best source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids, says a national government survey. As a result many could be lacking these vital nutrients, known to play a key role in almost every part of our bodies.

The National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) undertaken by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) also revealed adults only consume 40% or 56g of the recommended 140g of oily fish per week. Overall consumption of ‘bad fats’ or saturated fatty acids is also still exceeding government recommendations.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids or ‘the good fats’ make up at least 30% of our brains and eyes and they’re key for maintaining normal functioning. The NDNS report highlighted a clear Omega-3 nutritional gap with children in particular eating as little as 14g or (10%) of the recommended 140g of oily fish per week.

This sounds low but unsurprisingly oily fish isn’t often the first meal choice for many people so getting an intake of Omega-3 isn’t always easy. The survey also showed fish oils are among the most commonly used supplements across all age groups as people become more aware of the benefits of bridging nutritional gaps with an Omega-3 ranges like Equazen.
