What makes Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential?

Omega-3 and Omega-6 are essential fatty acids that are vital for good health. These ‘good fats’ play a role in almost every cell in your body and make up around 30% of your brain.

As your body cannot produce essential fatty acids, they must come from your diet. EQUAZEN is formulated in such a way that it contains a higher ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6. This is because the balance of these two essential fatty acids ensures that they work together in the most beneficial way.

A great source of Omega-3 is oily fish, but very often it does not pass the taste test! The government recommends eating at least two portions of fish per week, one of which should be oily, however most people do not eat enough to ensure an adequate intake. This is where EQUAZEN can help.

The unique EQUAZEN formulation is made up of two of the most influential Omega-3s: The structural fatty acid Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and the functional fatty acid Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA).

Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA):

During the development of the brain, throughout pregnancy and (at least) the first two years of life, structural fatty acids are particularly important. DHA makes up the building blocks of the brain, nervous system and eyes.

Supplementation of both mother and baby with DHA has been linked with benefits to the baby’s eye development, sleeping patterns, allergies and subsequent mental abilities four years later. In response, EQUAZEN has formulated both mumomega and EQUAZEN baby with a higher concentration of this structural fatty acid.

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA):

Emerging research suggests that high EPA Omega-3 is extremely important once the brain has stopped growing, as it helps in the transmission of messages between cells.

This is why all EQUAZEN products suitable for those over 2 years old have been formulated with a higher ratio of the functional fatty acid EPA. Products include EQUAZEN strawberry chews, smooth, liquid (citrus or vanilla) and capsules

Not all Omega-6 is the same. EQUAZEN products provide Omega-6 from Evening Primrose Oil which contains a large proportion of Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). GLA can act in much the same way as Omega-3 fatty acids and enhance their effects by exerting an anti-inflammatory action and reducing excess incorporation of inappropriate Omega-6 in the brain.

Our special blend prevents the Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids displacing each other, and is designed to allow incorporation of Omega-6, while still promoting the functional and structural influences from Omega-3.
