Frequently asked questions

Here you'll find all the answers to any questions you may have about our products, from sourcing to medical information.

Sourcing

Here at EQUAZEN, we take great pride in our unique Omega-3 with Omega-6 food supplements that use only the best ingredients, from carefully selected suppliers, and which are produced to the highest possible quality and hygiene standards.

Our docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is derived from DHA-rich fish, such as tuna, while our eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is sourced from anchovies, sardines and pilchards.

Our fish are harvested for only a few weeks of the year, when fish oils are at their highest, and as our suppliers also process the oil, we can ensure their source and quality. All Equazen products are manufactured to the highest standards and our facilities are certified for GMP (Good Manufacturing Process), HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) or relevant ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation).

EQUAZEN products that are rich in DHA, such as EQUAZEN Baby and Mumomega, and the fish oil used in our EQUAZEN family capsules, chews and liquids are refined in Norway at a facility registered with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and approved in accordance with the FDA’s seafood hygiene regulations. This means that it complies with strict hygiene rules that minimise the risk of contamination at all stages of the manufacturing process.

At EQUAZEN, we are passionate about protecting the environment, particularly our oceans and seas. This is why we are committed to sourcing fish from a select group of suppliers, where fishing only from sustainable stocks is guaranteed, and only harvest for a few weeks of the year.

The high docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) fish oil used in Mumomega and EQUAZEN Baby and the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) rich fish oil used in our EQUAZEN Family range, are sourced from warmer seas, such as Morocco, and in particular, Peru where the industry is subject to strict and enforced conditions and quotas to ensure sustainability.  Outside the fishing season, and in ‘closed areas’ which protect spawning grounds, there are enforced bans in place to prevent unauthorised fishing.  In these regions, our suppliers have been certified by an independent body as complying with the “Friend of the Sea” criteria for Products from Sustainable Fisheries.

It is also important to note that according to the Global Organisation for EPA and DHA (GOED), only around 6-10 percent of the total 1m tons crude fish oil produced per year, is refined for Omega-3 human consumption. The remaining >90% is used for animal feed.

The figure from the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organisation (IFFO) is even smaller, placing human consumption at less than 3%. Out of this, only 0.6% is thought to relate to the European market.

Importantly, any increase in the use of fish oil would not increase the number of fish caught, as the fish oil is a bi-product of the fishmeal industry.

Quality

Here at EQUAZEN, we take great pride in our oils, ensuring that every batch is produced to the highest possible quality, hygiene and legal standards that our customers have come to expect over the years. We maintain the quality of our products by working with suppliers who directly process the oil and who we know do not deal with agents or secondary parties. This means that we are involved at every step of the process and can ensure rigorous quality control.

To ensure that we are in full compliance with the stringent EU legislation relating to quality assurance, food safety and contamination, each batch of fish oil is tested to ensure it is free from environmental contaminants, such as pesticides, dioxin-like PCBs and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

As part of our rigorous testing, all EQUAZEN products are protected against:

  • Oil rancidity:  Oil that is left in open containers easily turns rancid through oxidation and degrades much faster. Our encapsulated products ensure this does not happen. Our liquid products also contain a higher concentration of antioxidant and come in special bottles to provide similar protection.
  • Contamination during transport: When transporting fish oil, it is crucial to protect the oils from oxygen, light and heavy metal as these can adversely affect the quality of the oil. EQUAZEN oils are protected from oxygen as they are stored in special closed containers which are flush with nitrogen gas and safe from light and heavy metal contamination.
  • Degeneration: Antioxidants are typically added to oils to help protect them and ensure sufficient shelf life. EQUAZEN uses tocopherol, more commonly known as vitamin E, at a level within the recommended daily allowance (RDA) and which ensures protection against degeneration.
  • Confirmed in rigorous testing: Notwithstanding the above, every batch of fish oil we produce is tested for compliance with approved specifications on quality and readings on environmental contaminants, including anisidine and peroxide, and then certified. Once released and sold, a thorough adverse event monitoring system is in place.

Technical

The capsule shell is made of gelatine and sometimes there may be slight variations in hardness, depending on the conditions in which the capsules have been stored. For example, if they are exposed to humidity, the capsules may go a little softer. These slight variances in hardness have no effect on its effectiveness, safety, tolerability or the stability of the product.

The soft gelatine shell of EQUAZEN capsules, which contains bovine (beef/cow) gelatine, has been certified Halal and Kosher. Unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee that the gelatine shell used in EQUAZEN chews is Kosher/Halal as it has been coloured using a natural red pigment obtained from carminic acid, which is derived from the cochineal beetle.

It is only the gelatine that has been certified halal/kosher and not the fish oils or products themselves.

Product Specific

There is a variation in the price of fish oil products on the market as these reflect the significant variation in oil quality, purity and formulation. EQUAZEN contains oils of the highest quality and is scientifically formulated to provide consumers with a unique blend of Omega-3 and Omega-6. This quality of ingredients, together with ethical sourcing, processing and manufacturing, is necessarily reflected in its price. However, at a capsules cost from as little as 21p per day at an intake of 2 daily, we believe that this offers you and your family, real value for money.

We recognise however, that a higher initial intake may be expensive for some families, so to help, we have set up an Income Support Initiative which gives a 50% discount for the first three months of supplementation. Please contact our Customer Services for more information about this scheme.

At EQUAZEN, we have spent a lot of time scientifically developing our EQUAZEN product range to support differing formulations of Omega-3 and Omega-6 and formats. As a result, we have products designed to meet the specific needs of different life stages, such as during pregnancy or infancy, as well as solutions for those who find it difficult to take supplements, or who have even the most discerning of palates!

Our Products tab provides all the information you need on our range of capsules, liquids and flavoured chews, together with pack sizes and any minimum age restrictions.

Medical Queries

EQUAZEN products have been scientifically formulated to a unique blend of high quality Omega-3 and Omega-6 oils. Our product range is sourced, processed and manufactured to the highest European Union and World Health Organisation standards of hygiene to ensure its purity. Consequently, the incidence of side effects associated with the use of EQUAZEN is very rare.

Our safety monitoring procedure has received isolated reports of skin rashes, but these equate to approximately 1 case in 10,000 consumers. Some people also report initial nausea and loose stools as the body adjusts to this new dietary input. These effects may be helped by ensuring EQUAZEN is taken with meals.

You will appreciate that as a nutritional supplement manufacturer, we cannot offer any specific medical advice and recommend that you speak to a health care professional about any effect that supplementation with Omega 3 or Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), may have on your current medication, prior to starting EQUAZEN.

Pregnancy

EQUAZEN has been specially formulated mumomega for women during pregnancy and breastfeeding as it contains a higher concentration of the structural fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and omega-3, than standard EQUAZEN. Adequate maternal intake of DHA throughout pregnancy is particularly important as it has been shown to contribute to the normal development of both the brain and eye of the foetus and breastfed infants.

These beneficial effects on the foetus and breastfed infants has led the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to recommend all pregnant and nursing women consume the required 200 mg DHA per day, in addition to the 250 mg Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA+ DHA) per day already recommended for all adults.

High Intake

Here at EQUAZEN, we have spent lots of time scientifically developing our unique products. For individuals and families who are unable to receive the recommended intake from their diet alone, we advise a regular daily intake of 2 EQUAZEN capsules, taken with food.

However, if you are starting supplementation for the first time, there have been studies which suggest it is beneficial to take a higher daily intake of 6 capsules, for the first 12 weeks. This may be because at the start many people can be fatty acid deficient, and so initially require a higher intake to build up their body's stores of these vital nutrients.

EQUAZEN’s unique formulation of Omega-3 and Omega-6 is a food supplement, and has no issues or risks associated with changing intake levels. However, different fatty acids last for different lengths of time in the body, with some rapidly declining in concentration within a few days. For this reason, we recommend continued daily use of EQUAZEN.

If supplementation is resumed after a prolonged period, it may be worth considering starting at a higher intake (6 capsules daily) for the first 12 weeks, before reducing to the usual 2 capsules per day.
